But after working closely with countless brides and grooms since 2010 as an experienced wedding videographer, I’ve found these top 5 wedding planning tips are the most practical and memorable for couples, the kind you didn’t think you’d need and you’ll really thank yourself for on the big day!

Every pre-wedding meeting and every email I send as the wedding approaches I try and share helpful tips. These top 5 tips are the ones that have proven to be the most popular and well received over all these year. Top 5 Essential Wedding Planning Tips Every Couple Should Know!

Wedding Planning Tip 1: Take Quiet Moments Just for You on Your Wedding Day

wedding tip 1 taking a moment together

You’ve probably heard the saying, “Your wedding day will fly by.” And honestly, you can’t fully imagine how fast until you experience it. I hear it at EVERY. SINGLE. WEDDING!

One of the best ways to slow time down a little? Steal a few quiet moments away from the crowd. Whether it’s for some romantic photos or couple shots for the video or simply a peaceful chat on a garden bench, these breaks help the day really sink in and help you avoid feeling like you’ve forgotten it all come the morning.

It’s a chance to pause, reflect, and connect with each other away from the excitement.

Pro tip: If you worry about missing parts of the day, your wedding video will capture all the moments you might forget. Nothing beats soaking it in in the moment but a wedding video can really help ensure you remember as much as possible for many years to come!

Wedding Planning Tip 2: Use Trusted Recommendations and Wedding Supplier Referrals

wedding tip 2 ask for recommendations

Finding the best wedding suppliers (or vendors) can be daunting and even overwhelming, especially if you’re one of the first in your friend group to get married or if the recommendations you have don’t quite feel like a match.

Start with trusted recommendations but, don’t stop there!

Ask your already booked suppliers (photographers, planners, venue coordinators) for their favourite wedding experts they’ve worked with. They will have people that they really enjoy working with and have seen their work on the day (and after) first hand so a great resource to tap in to!

Wedding Suppliers I LOVE!

If you head over to my ‘Suppliers I Love‘ page I have some of my personal favourites there too! But that’s by no means an exhaustive list so do pick my wedding brain if you need more!

There’s also places like wedding blogs (I particularly love English Wedding, Adored Bride and Loved Up North) where you can see real weddings and enjoy detailed ‘features’ showcasing some of the best in the business.

Wedding directories and online wedding planners have even come on over the years and sites like Bridebook are perfect ‘all in one’ for keeping all your wedding details and bookings in one place!

Wedding Planning Tip 3:Perfume Before Jewellery On Your Wedding Morning

wedding tips 3 perfume before jewellery

This little-known beauty tip surprised my bride Weinee, and it might surprise you too!

Avoid spraying perfume directly on your jewellery, especially delicate pieces like pearls, as it can dull their shine over time.

Instead, apply your perfectly picked perfume before putting on your jewellery pieces for that fresh scent without any damage.

Bonus pro tip: Spray a little perfume on your wedding veil or train to leave a subtle, romantic fragrance trail as you walk down the aisle. It’s still one of my favourite tips I share on a wedding morning!

Wedding Planning Tip 4: Write Wedding Speeches That Are Personal and True to You

wedding tips 4 for speeches and speaking from the heart

If you’ve watched plenty of wedding speeches on YouTube (THAT speech from Tom Fletcher springs to mind!) or been to many weddings, you’ll notice some jokes and clichés repeat (‘even the cakes in tiers’ anyone??). Thanks to Google and speech-writing guides, there’s a ton of inspiration online when it comes to writing your wedding speech.

The most memorable and heartfelt wedding speeches are the ones filled with personal stories. Like how you met, the funny moments during your proposal, or that time you actually turned each other down the first time!

These authentic and natural stories make everyone laugh and feel connected. If I’m laughing and crying along as your wedding videographer, then you’ve hit the right spot of genuine and funny.

If you want to see some of my favourite wedding speech highlights I’ve filmed over the years, just drop me a message. I’d love to share some with you!

Wedding Planning Tips 5: Delegate For A Stress Free Wedding

wedding tip team work makes the dream work

You’ve planned the day now let your loved ones help you enjoy it!

It’s so tempting to take on everything yourself (especially if you’re the organised one or you’re a bit of a perfectionist like me!), but on the day, you’ll want to be fully present, not worrying about where the confetti is or whether the cake knife is at the reception!

Delegating tasks along the way can really help you avoid the overwhelm or stress that can come of trying to do it alllll yourself.

Give small jobs to your wedding party or close family/friends, things like:

  • Helping get wedding DIY bits wedding ready
  • Making sure buttonholes are handed out

  • Keeping track of your lipstick for touch-ups

  • Grabbing your overnight bag at the end of the night

  • Organising group photos

  • Handing out sparklers or confetti

Most people want to help, they just need a little direction.

Quite a few of my couples even plan wedding evenings with their bridal party and friends so they can all work together sorting out wedding favours, handmade stationary or any other DIY bits ready for the big day.

Delegating on the wedding day also helps your photographer and videographer too! When someone knows what’s happening and when, things run smoothly, nothing gets missed, and you get to focus on enjoying the day (as you should!) without us asking you a load of questions too!

Wedding Planning Tips: Wedding Morning Bonus Tip!

wedding bonus tip to think ahead

Here’s a little trick that can make a big difference on your wedding morning: wear your strapless bra (or none at all) from the start, and ditch tight socks early on! This helps to avoid red marks on your shoulders or ankles when it’s time to get into your dress.

Trust me you don’t want to be massaging sock lines away right before slipping into your gown! We’ve all been there before a night out, your wedding morning doesn’t need this added to the list too!

Bonus tip: While you’re getting ready, it’s also a great idea to lay out all your wedding day details! Think wedding perfume, your shoes, jewellery, maybe even your invitation/stationary and any sentimental items. Not only does this make it easier when it’s time to get dressed, but it also gives your photographer or videographer a chance to capture beautiful flat lay shots of those personal touches before it gets hectic!

These little steps help the morning feel calm, organised, and photo-ready and that’s exactly how you’ll want to start your big day!

No matter how much you plan, your wedding day will have surprises and not everything will run to plan/schedule!

The best advice I can give is to stay present, soak in the love, and enjoy your day with your partner, family, and friends.

Trust your suppliers, embrace the little imperfections, and remember why you’re celebrating! It can be easy to get swept up in things that may be going wrong and let it ruin what is an amazing day. I bet no-one else is noticing so try and deal with that stuff after the wedding day if you can!
