The Ultimate Surprise: A Secret Elopement at Ormskirk Registry Office

There is something incredibly exciting about being the only one in on a secret. When Naomi and Maik reached out about their intimate elopement at Ormskirk Registry Office, it wasn’t just the local wedding aspect that excited me…it was being involved in the plan!

Imagine telling your parents you’re heading meeting up for a casual birthday lunch at The Fat Italian (handily opposite the Ormskirk Registry Office), only to ask them to be your wedding ceremony witnesses instead. It was spontaneous, deeply personal, and proof that a wedding doesn’t need a three-course banquet for 100 people to feel monumental.

As a local wedding videographer and photographer in Ormskirk, capturing that ‘wait, what..now?‘ and then helping them relive that moment with her parents’ in candid video and photos was a total career highlight.

Capturing A Shorter Wedding Day or Elopement in Lancashire

Many couples assume that ‘elopement’ or ‘short coverage’ means stripping things back to the bare minimum. But at Love Gets Sweeter, I see it differently. Choosing a shorter video and photography package isn’t about a smaller budget; it’s about a more personal approach.

By focusing on a smaller window, whether that be 1 whirlwind hour or a few hours, I aim to capture things that will take you right back to this moment. For Naomi and Maik, this meant moments spent with their young Daughter Heidi and Naomi’s Parents. No performance, no ‘fluff’ or directing – just high-end, cinematic storytelling that documents the start of a marriage.

As I’d captured their pregnancy and newborn milestones they were already comfortable with my documentary style and approach so this shoot became more than just the ceremony. We agreed it would be lovely to document them getting ready together at their family home before heading to the restaurant. Capturing their relaxed wedding morning with their Daughter, reading on the floor and enjoying each others company was such a different vibe to the business of a typical wedding day!

The candid photo of their Daughter watching her Mum put on her wedding shoes has gone on to win a few awards since too! As a Mother myself I can imagine how amazing that will be for her Daughter to look back on when she’s older.

One Storyteller, Two Mediums: The Beauty of Hybrid Coverage

One of the reasons this secret wedding worked so well was the hybrid video and photo coverage. For smaller wedding and in small rooms like the ceremony suites in Ormskirk Registry Office, it will feel less intrusive having one person discreetly capturing your ceremony over two teams of people.

Because I provide both photography and filmmaking, I can switch between the two seamlessly. It meant we got the ‘key’ shots of the rings being exchanged and vows being shared, but also the moving footage and audio of those emotional moments too. As well as anything that couldn’t be planned for, from the baby’s first steps down the aisle or a tear being wiped away from your Mum’s face.

It’s a unique approach for couples who want the full production value without the production crowd!

Local Spotlight: Ormskirk Registry Office Elopement Guide

Ormskirk is arguably one of the most underrated spots for a Lancashire elopement. If you are looking to plan something similar, here are a few reasons why this small Historic market town works so well for a refined, smaller wedding:

  • The Registry Office: Located in the heart of the town, it offers a classic backdrop for a short legal ceremony. With a carpark to the rear, it’s super accessible and takes the headache away of trying to park for a city wedding!
  • The Food Scene: With incredible spots like The Fat Italian over the road or other local favourites just a short walk away, you can transition from ‘I do’ to a high-end celebratory meal in minutes. A short drive and you could be enjoying some Michelin star goodness at the likes of Moor Hall, The Barn (at Moor Hall) and Solo in Aughton.
  • The Portrait Backdrops: From the historic architecture of the town center to the greenery of Victoria Park or Coronation Park, we don’t have to travel far to get those relaxed couple portraits.

With Ormskirk Train station a short walk away the possibilities are endless for your next stop after you legally say ‘I do’! With routes to Preston via Burscough and Liverpool, Southport and the Wirral…you can even go all the way through to Liverpool South Parkway to get a plane if you wanted!
